Another Great Day For Hecky!

Heckmondwike players followed up their first two good results in the Pennine League with another fantastic one as we hosted players from Huddersfield, Rochdale and Trafford on Sunday.

It means we have a good lead over the chasing pack going in to the final day of matches at Rochdale on 17th of March.  You can read a full report of the day on our blog here!

Another 5-0 Victory Sees Us Top... For Now!

Our West Yorkshire league team put in another stellar performance today to secure a 5-0 victory that sees us return to the top of the standings… for now!  With 4 teams separated by just a single win this result inches us above the chasing pack but the other sides all have an extra fixture in the back pocket of their shorts to try and make up the deficit.

Today Kath, Clive, Darren, Tony, Roger F and Ian all managed to win both their pairs and triples matches and with a combined points difference of +29… something that might be in our favour come the end of the season.

Now we will await results from other matches and hope the team can secure a league victory in the final game.

Steve Rathmell Wins The May Melee!

Today 39 members were at Firth Park hoping to add to their Spring Melee Championship points total.

12 members won their first two games and as is often the case the spell was broken for six of them in their third game.

David Whittington was in sixth place with 3 wins and plus 14 points. Just two points better off was Robin Schofield. A brilliant performance by June Halliwell brought her three wins and plus 18 points and fourth position. Pauline Fenton also shone today with three wins and plus 22 points to step onto the podium in third place. Sorry Pauline but on checking your tally I had to deduct two points.

Runner up was Trevor May with three wins and plus 24 points. Well done everyone.

However, the May 2022 Melee Champion was Steve Rathmell with an excellent 3 wins plus 25 points.

Top At Halfway!

The West Yorkshire league rolls on and we have reached the halfway stage.

The game this week saw another narrow 3-2 loss away at Huddersfield.  Clive, Kath, Tony, Roger, Colin & Ian played the closest match yet with 3 of the games decided by a 13-12 score line.  Unfortunately two of those went against us, contributing to the narrow loss.

Those high scoring losses help us though with overall points difference and that is what sees Heckmondwike stay top, ahead of Wetherby, at the halfway stage of the season.

It couldn’t be closer with four teams separated by just two wins an exciting second half of the season lies in prospect.  It has been great to see lots of different members representing Heckmondwike and we look forward to return matches with all the other teams in the second half of the season.

A Narrow Win This Week...

This week Heckmondwike returned to winning ways with a narrow 3-2 win at home to Mirfield.  This week Tony, Bill, Bev, Roger, Gordon and Alma dovetailed nicely to ensure we stayed top of the league again as we go towards the halfway stage of the season.

A Narrow Loss... But Still Top!

Heckmondwike fell to their first league defeat of the season away at Wetherby Petanque with a narrow 3-2 loss.  Although a loss it was a strong performance away from home against a tough Wetherby team and on a tricky terrain.

Added to that there were several members of the team making their debuts for the club and so it was good for them to gain experience and get some points on the board.  This week newbies Bill, Darren and Cath joined Alma, Roger F and Colin for the visit to Wetherby and Darren and Bill managed a good 13-7 win in their pairs match.  There might be some selection headaches for the boss when he returns from holiday, this must be what managing Man City feels like!

As always the games were competitive but played in great spirits and we look forward to welcoming Wetherby for the return match later in the season.

The result did just enough to keep Heckmondwike top of the standings with 3 games gone.  You can see the 2022 West Yorkshire League page below.

Our Jubilee Barbeque Plans

What better way to celebrate a 70-year reign than chucking some burgers and bangers on the barby!

We are planning a Platinum Jubilee BBQ to take place after social play on Saturday 4th of June.

Our resident chef Gordon has asked members to choose whether they’d like a burger or a hot dog (or both) and to write their name and their choice on the list in the clubhouse.  The cost will be £2.50 per person so please join us for a great event to celebrate a lady even older than all of us!

Top Of The League... For Now!

Heckmondwike followed up their 4-1 win last week with a 5-0 result at home to Leeds.

A brilliant performance from all our team Roger, Kath, Clive, Ian, Colin and Gordon meant we secured a whitewash victory over last season’s league winners.

The standard was very high with Leeds performing extremely well in all matches leading to close games in most of the matches and Heckmondwike just prevailing in some very close finishes.  We look forward to the away match against a great team!

Bill Ewart Wins The April Melee!

An excellent 38 members joined in the April Month End Melee.

After 2 rounds 10 members had achieved 2 wins from 2 games but only 6 managed the magical trio of wins.

The final result was very close with just 3 points covering the top 4 places.  Clive came fourth with 3 wins and plus 22 points. In joint second place with 3 wins and plus 24 points were two ladies, Kath Westley and Doreen Hunter.  However Just one point ahead of them, and this month’s Champion was Bill Ewart with 3 wins and plus 25 points.

Well done to Bill and it’s still all to play for in the last 2 months of our Spring Melee!

Yorkshire Winter League Comes To Heckmondwike

Heckmondwike played host to the final event of the Yorkshire Winter League series on Sunday.  Twenty four pairs from around Yorkshire Region and including pairs from Petanque North West and East Midlands.

There were mixed fortunes for our six pairs from Heckmondwike but all will have gained experience in playing against some excellent quality opposition. Good news for our club was that two of our pairs made it onto the podium.

The competition winners with five wins and a magnificent plus 50 points was Sylvestre and Clare. An excellent exhibition of shooting and pointing by these two. In second place with 5 wins and plus 26 points was Kath and me, while the third place team was another Hecky pairing in Gordon Walsworth and Roger Farrar with 4 wins and plus 29 points.  An excellent result for Heckmondwike. Some notable performances from Tony McD and Alma J, Peter W with Sheila D, Cath C with Bob T, and Kevin H with Christine A capped a great showing from Heckmondwike PC.

Also a big thank you to Gordon who achieved his playing success while still finding the energy to provide bacon baps before kick-off, and to Alma and Kath for looking after the registration of teams and running a brilliant raffle which raised around £100 for our chosen charities, Candlelighters and Cystic Fibrosis St James.

Thanks to those of our members for helping litter picking, setting up and clearing up after the event along with our supporters. A great team effort.

Ian Fitton Is Our March Melee Winner!

Forty members took to the terrains today to play our Month End Melee in brilliant sunshine.

The three round melee produced its usual degree of good performances, close victories but unusually we had six games ending with 13-0 scores.

After two rounds we had 11 pairs with two wins each but by the end there were just five teams with three wins.

In fifth place with 3 wins and plus 15 points was Cath Clegg and just a point ahead in fourth was Kath Westley.

Recent new member Paul Hudson had a excellent day to come third with 3 wins and plus 19 points. Peter Wharton had a great day too with 3 wins and plus 25 to take the runner-up spot but with a superb points difference of plus 34 it was Ian Fitton who finished top of the podium.

Roger Farrar retains the overall lead in the SPRING MELEE SERIES… Will he be caught by anyone come June?

Mixed Triples Winners Crowned.

Today 30 members turned up to play our Mixed Triples Snake competition.  It was good that the numbers helped make sure that following the draw, all 10 teams were fully mixed.

Going into the final of the three rounds there were three teams with two wins and hoping for success in the third. Leading the way were Mike D, Sheila D and Ken H on +11 points. However they met a determined team in Roger F, Cath C and Audrey B who pushed them all the way. Mike, Sheila and Ken prevailed but by a narrow margin of 13-12. David W, Pauline F and Kevin H had a good win 13-8 but this brought them dead level with Mike, Sheila and Ken on 3 wins plus 12 points. Meanwhile, an excellent 13-5 win by David B, Bev W and Tony Mc saw them leapfrog the opposition into the lead with a final match winning score of 3 wins plus 16 points.

Thankyou everyone for contributing to an excellent club competition and very well done to Champions David B, Bev W and Tony Mc.  An extra pat on the back for Tony for winning two club competitions in a row!  Can he make it three in a row at the March Melee?

Thank you to Tony for standing in to organise the event.  Quite a baptism of fire but very well done.  Also a very big thank you to Carol and Alma who sportingly didn’t take part but helped Tony with the admin.

A Birthday Win For Tony Mac!

Our February Month End Melee was attended by 39 members and played in pleasant, dry and sometimes sunny conditions. Quite a lovely change after recent weeks. This was the second melee of our SPRING MELEE SERIES and was won by birthday boy Tony McDonald who celebrated his new age with three wins and a great nett difference of +28.

This result, with another good result for Roger F, means it’s tight at the top of the Spring Series leaderboard with the best four results from the six melees between now and June counting to the overall winner.  Tony and Roger have both got off to solid starts but there’s plenty of time for others to catch up, starting in March!

A Fabulous Total Raised For Beau!

Our amazing members raised a fantastic total of £750.00 for Beau’s Fight Against Cancer Campaign.  Beau is the granddaughter of one of our members, Kevin, and so it was fantastic to see our players contribute through raffles, donations and sales to raise a brilliant sum for a fantastic cause.

From 45 to 6...

Last Wednesday saw mild and dry conditions attract a playing crop of 45 for our Wednesday afternoon social play.  This week the weather was dreadful and just six hardy soles made it out on to the terrains for one triples match.  Clive, Bob, Kevin, Darren, Tony and Roger…  Not sure if you were brave or foolish but well done for making sure it wasn’t a complete washout!
